Gandalf was rescued from the SPCA on the 2nd of December 2014, he arrived on site and was there for a week. We noticed he had a cough so I brought him home and took him to the vet. Distemper, biliary, parvo, nose biopsy, sonar and x-rays were done all possible to try find the problem. Tests for distemper were negative all 4 times the vet did them.
We then returned Gandalf as he was walking with a limp to the left, x-rays shows his left back leg was bone on bone there was no socket. While he was under a spinal tap was performed, and this was the news we dreaded, the spinal fluid showed positive. Gandalf came home I was told by Dr Tim to not expect anything as distemper kills. This I did understand.
Gandalf though put up a fight. He was on cortisone and doxy dog pills and loved his food, he really liked eating. We fed Gandalf all the luxuries, he could not eat pellets but he had Woolworth’s duck and liver food, chicken, dry wors and his own pieces of specially bought biltong.
Gandalf started deteriorating over the last two weeks. We were carrying him outside and back inside. He had nose bleeds, and had a seizure and then again a week before another two seizures and I knew my time with my beautiful boy was coming to an end fast.
I slept next to Gandalf on a mattress because if I walked away he would cry for me. Kelly looked after him when I took pups to,their new home and I got a bb to say Mom your dogs is looking for you :-).
On Sunday night the 29th I decided that I need to make the call as I cannot let this beautiful regal dignified boy suffer or deteriorate more. I cried the whole night, and I cried the whole day on Monday sitting with Gandalf outside on the deck and carrying him inside I held him for the last hour in my arms and kissed, stroked and spoke to him. I spoilt him with chicken lots of it, dry wors and his ice cubes which Ryan used to give him.
Monday at 3.30pm we went to the Vet Dr Lynne whom told me to go pick a spot under a tree and she would come to me. Phil, Kel and I sat with Gandy and Dr Lynne and Nurse Shayna came to us, I picked Gandalf up into my arms and Dr Lynne let him go to sleep so peacefully. We that had cared and loved him so much were all with him till the end. Dr Tim joined us as this amazing team look after all my rescues and love and care for them. I cannot do what I do without my trusted Vets.
Gandalf was loved and know by so many and today we honor him on our walk. Jennifer M Dolan will be walking for him at the same time as we walk in Australia.
I am so honored to have been chosen by him to take care, love him and only vice him the best of everything which we did as a family and rescuer!
Gandalf you stole my heart totally and broke it too, Thank you for being the amazing boy you were, we love you, miss you and will never forget you my amazing beauty!
